What is steampunk, anyway?

Steampunk is difficult to define, and more accomplished people than ourselves have struggled to define the term. Steampunk is many things to many people. It is a genre of art, literature, and fashion. It is a form of historical science fiction. It is a subculture of fantasy, costumes, and gadgetry. It is a philosophy.

To us, steampunk is an aesthetic that blends neoVictorian style with Industrial and mechanized technology and reimagines a past, present, and future that might have been. It is a DIY mindset that appreciates the skill, hard work, and creativity required to express oneself through engineering, mixed media, personal adornment, and civilized thought, speech, and art. Now, if that doesn’t explain everything, I suggest that you Google the word “steampunk” and look at the images. As mentioned above, steampunk is an aesthetic: it is one of those things that you may not be able to explain, but you know it when you see it.

Terrific site! Looking forward to future posts and discussions (especially from fellow Ohioans).

I did a post on the Writer’s Digest Guide to Literary Agent’s blog about defining Steampunk within the literary field. It was difficult, to say the least, especially considering I only had 800 words to do it.

Anyway – excited to find out what’s next at Frenzy Universe!
